Ancient Feng Shui Knowledge
Ancient Knowledge – Modern World
: The relevance of feng shui today.
“I’m not having some 3000 year
old Chinese guy telling me where to put my sofa”. It is
not uncommon to hear people express this kind of sentiment when
talking about the concept of feng shui. Actually, mankind has
not evolved much in biological terms in the last 3 millennia,
and so much of the original research on human life that was
done by our ancestors is still as relevant as it ever was. The
world that surrounds us today continues to play a bigger part
in our day to day lives than might be immediately apparent.
There is no life on Mars because the environment
does not support it. Numerous species are becoming extinct or
endangered on our own planet because their supporting environment
has been damaged or destroyed. If the environment is not right,
life cannot survive. Science could probably measure quite specifically
what environmental requirements are needed to support a given
life form. But as we all know, there is much more to being alive
than what science can currently tell us.
“Location Location Location” is
a phrase that has become part of our language and acknowledges
the importance of position, particularly when it comes to the
desirability of property. Everybody wants to live in a good
environment, and are willing to pay for it. Quite what constitutes
a good environment in this context is something that is still
beyond conventional science, but it is something that we can
all understand on a different level.
Not in my back yard! We regularly hear about
the NIMBY culture when new developments are proposed. People
will naturally want to preserve keep their local environment
as “good” as possible and will fight anything that
threatens it; while they instinctively understand the need,
it is difficult to quantify that in any real way, and as a result
the planners usually get their way.
Most householders will at some point have decorated
their living room. The chances are, that the reason they did
it was “because it was needed”. The old decor was
affecting them in such a way as to cause them to change it.
The expectation is that when the job is completed, the room
will feel “better”, and they will therefore feel
happier living in that space.
Environmental issues affect everyone. Traditional
feng shui methods can provide a means to better understand a
situation in relation to the human aspect rather than the purely
scientific. When people are comfortable and supported by the
environment around them, they are happier, healthier and more
productive than they would otherwise be. Feng shui can show
how to create or improve an environment that can properly support
the people living in it.
So yes, many of the methods have been
handed down over thousands of years, but they are just as relevant
today as they ever were.
