Step 1: Defining your life plan
Are you drifting or creating your future?
With no clear picture of how you
want your life to be, how can you begin to live it? When you
have your personal aim, you know the first step to take, how
to measure your progress and where you are at any particular
point.
Let’s imagine that you’re
in an ornate church filled with flowers and their scent. You
look down to see a familiar body lying in a box – it’s
you!
What would you like to be remembered
for?
Give examples of things you want to have done, your hopes, dreams
and expectations and your role in events.
What do want others to see in
you?
List the personal qualities and skills you want to use and/or
develop.
What headline would you like to
see in a newspaper to describe your life story?
Take the answers to these questions
and write one or two paragraphs as an epitaph to you. This is
your life plan.
Those of you who like images you
might want to translate this exercise into a collage and some
of you might be happier with a list or you would like to explore
in more detail how the future would feel or sound as well as
look like.
Then, using this information,
I want you to write one sentence to make a personal mission
statement and then say what you need to fulfil this and what
roles you have to adopt.
Eg. My mission is to live with
integrity and to make a difference in the lives of others.
To fulfil this mission:
I am devoted: my time, talents
and resources are focused on my mission.
I inspire: I teach by example
I influence: What I do makes a difference in the lives of others.
I give: I go the extra mile to create value.
These roles take priority in achieving
my mission:
Wife: together with my partner
we work to achieve a balanced, harmonious life.
Sister/daughter: I listen, support and nurture.
Neighbour: I work for the greater good.
Business manager: I am a catalyst for developing performance
improvement.
Associate: I co-operate to create a solid, long term relationship.
Academic: I learn from mistakes and develop everyday.
Over the next week start
to flesh out the detail and begin to mentally step into the
future.
