Step 3: Creating balanced goals
In the last module we explored
your values and the role that mindset can play in creating barriers
to going forward. We now look at setting goals which allow you
to lead a balanced lifestyle in achieving your plan.
Take your journal and open it
at a fresh page or find an A4 sheet of paper. Draw a circle,
but leave enough space to add additional comments around the
outside. Split the circle into eight segments and label them:
• Body and health
• Financial well-being
• Work/ career
• Personal relationships
• Fun and adventure/ personal growth
• Contributions to others
The remaining two I leave to you.
It could be spiritual well-being or you might want to separate
immediate family from friends under personal relationships.
Put a 0 at the centre of the circle
and label the circumference as 10. Put a line across each segment
to indicate how satisfied you are with each section between
0 and 10. Is it helping you get to your life plan, mission statement
and roles?
Taking each slice of the circle
and ask yourself:
What would make it congruent with
my values and beliefs?
Why is it important to achieve?
What action will I take? Make
this specific, measurable and realistic and time bound because
this is going to form your goal.
Eg. Goal: To improve my cardiovascular
efficiency from XXX to XXX by 31st December 2005
Take time to really think through
the questions and scribble your answers down on the same sheet
of paper in the space you left around the diagram.
This will give you an indication
of where you might want to start. In the next module we will
be looking at building an action plan for one segment. We deliberately
draw your life as a ‘whole’ because any action taken
on one section will impact on the others.
