NATURAL REMEDY FIRST AID
INTRODUCTION
Below are some useful tips on using natural products to help
with basic first aid, health and healing.
• ALWAYS seek medical advice or call
for the emergency services should any situation become serious.
• Do not try to self-treat in emergency circumstances.
• Natural and complementary medicine should be COMPLEMENTARY
to modern medicine, not one to exclude the other.
• Keep all medicines even natural remedies in airtight
containers away from heat, light and out of reach of children.
• Keep natural medicines in dark glass jars away from
heat, light and out of reach of children.
• If a medicine should spill out of it’s container,
it’s generally best to throw out the spilled medication
rather than put it back, as it may contaminate the rest of the
preparation (particularly homeopathic remedies).

IMMUNE STIMULANTS - coughs, colds, flu and illness recovery.
Echinacea - Best taken in tincture or dried
herb form only when necessary. Echinacea is not to be taken
on a daily basis. Check your supplier, as there are a lot of
products claiming to be Echinacea but which only contain traces
of the herb. Check its botanical name - Echinacea Purpurea or
Echinacea Angustifolia. True Echinacea when taken in tincture
form leaves a tingling sensation on the tongue.
Garlic- nature's unsociable antibiotic - Take
in any form, if you can't eat fresh garlic, place a pealed clove
in a sock and wear overnight. There is a product called AlliMax
available in Boots that is very effective and very reasonably
priced. CAUTION: Do not take large doses if you are on anti
blood clotting medication eg. Warfarin or Heparin.
Vitamin C – an adult can take mega doses
of up to 1000mgms (1gm) per day. If you have taken too much
you will void via the bowel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SKIN - CUTS, SCRATCHES, GRAZES, BITES, STINGS
AND SPOTS
Aloe Vera gel is pleasant and versatile. Its
effect is cooling and soothing and is easily rubbed in. Use
as necessary
Calendula and/or Comfrey cream, lotion or
ointment is excellent for grazes, scratches, minor cuts and
burns as both herbs possess skin healing properties.
Tea Tree, Manuka or Lavender lotions are antiseptic
and will not sting when applied. The Essential Oil can be applied
neat via a Q-tip to spots, blemishes, Athletes Foot, bites and
cold sores.
Wasp stings and marine stingers - because
their sting is alkaline, applying something acidic like vinegar
or raw onion helps to neutralise the poison (the nearest fish
and chip shop will always have some vinegar to hand). Homeopathic
remedy Apis Mel 6 or 30 is also helpful.
Bee stings - because the sting is acid, applying
something alkaline like a paste of baking soda and water will
help neutralise the poison. Homeopathic remedy Apis Mel 6 or
30 is also helpful.
ALWAYS remove the insect sting itself before
applying anything.
Non serious slicing cuts - a sprinkle of chili
powder into the cut will stop the bleeding by constricting the
blood vessels. The chili also acts as a painkiller. Sounds terrible,
but, it’s very effective.
Irritated and itchy skin - Oat baths - Place
a cup of porridge oats in a piece of cloth or sock (tie in a
knot). Place in a warm NOT hot bath. As the oats soak, a milk
will be produced which is extremely soothing for any irritated,
itchy or inflamed skin condition like psoriasis, eczema and
sunburn. Safe for children.
Sores like leg ulcers that are slow to heal
can either be bathed in a solution of sterilised water and a
drop of Myrrh essential oil or covered with Manuka Honey from
New Zealand then apply a fresh dressing.
Insect repellent - There are many lotions,
gels, spays and candles available from Health food stores, online
shopping and chemists that contain Citronella - a lemon scented
essential oil known for it’s insect repellent properties.
You can make your own by adding 5ml of Citronella to 250ml of
cheap strong Vodka in a spray bottle.

SLEEPING DIFFICULTIES
Take a warm bath with sleep promoting essential
oils such as Lavender, French Marjoram, Melissa or Sandalwood.
Fill the bath then put in up to 5 drops of essential oil/s,
choose a relaxing piece of music, switch off your phones, light
a candle and RELAX.
Herbal remedies such as Chamomile, Valerian,
Lemon Balm or Passion Flower can all be taken in tea, tincture,
capsule or tablet just before bedtime as per product instructions.
3 drops of Lavender, French/Sweet Marjoram,
Melissa or Sandalwood essential oil on your pillow just before
bedtime, will help to induce sleep.

TRAVEL SICKNESS
GINGER is a traditional remedy for all forms
of nausea, and is especially associated with travel. Capsules,
herbal teas and tinctures can be obtained from various suppliers.
Also ginger root or crystallised ginger can be chewed during
the journey.
Acupressure wrist bands place pressure on
Pericardium 7, the acupuncture point associated with nausea
and anxiety. To find Pericardium 7 first form a fist with your
hand. Then bend the fist slightly forward which will emphasise
2 large tendons in the middle of your wrist. Pericardium 7 is
situated in the middle of the 2 tendons on the wrist bracelet
(the horizontal lines on the inside of your wrist).
Homeopathic travel sickness remedies are available
from any good Health Food Stores, chemists and online from Complementary
Health Sites.

BURNS AND SCALDS
ALWAYS cool the area with cold running water
before anything is applied.
Minor burn or scald - Apply neat Lavender
oil directly onto the area, and if possible elevate to reduce
blood flow. As the Lavender evapourates keep applying until
the pain subsides.
Sunburn - Lavender lotion or Aloe Vera gel
applied regularly after exposure will help prevent blistering,
ease the pain and reduce heat. Don't rub, gently pat the lotion
or gel onto the skin. An Oat bath will also help to sooth the
skin.
If the burn is accompanied with shock - Bach
Rescue Remedy, Australian Bush Flower Emergency Essence or Arnica
30 can be taken. If necessary seek medical advice or call the
emergency services.
ALWAYS SEEK MEDICAL HELP FOR LARGE OR SERIOUS
BURNS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRUISING AND SPRAINS
ARNICA 6 or 30 Homeopathic remedy or cream
- DO NOT USE THE CREAM WHERE THE SKIN IS BROKEN. Take asap after
the incident.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHOCK AND DISTRESS
Bach Rescue Remedy or Australian Bush Flower
Emergency Essence - 4 drops directly on the tougne asap.
Arnica 30 - 1 every ½ hour for the
first 4 hours then as needed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHOCK CAN BE SERIOUS AND POSSIBLY LIFE THREATENING.
IF IN DOUBT SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE OR CALL THE
EMERGENCY SERVICES.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ORAL HYGIENE
For mouth ulcers and gum infections, gargle
with Tea Tree, Manuka or Myrrh essential oil - Add 1 drop of
essential oil to ½ inch of water in a tumbler glass.
Gargle for 1-2mins then spit out. Do not swallow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE.
IF IN DOUBT - GET IT CHECKED OUT!!

NATURAL FIRST AID - FLOWER ESSENCES
Flower Essences are the invention of Dr Edward
Bach in early 1900’s. They are made by placing a flower
into spring water with a little brandy, where upon the ‘energy
vibration’ of the flower is infused into the liquid. Every
flower has a different vibration, which is then prescribed by
a practitioner for a specific issue or illness.
The 2 Essences described below are for use
in distressed states. There are over 62 Australian Bush Flower
Essences and 38 Bach Flower Essences. Each single essence is
for a specific emotional, mental, spiritual or physical condition.
There are also combination essences to aid various transitions,
cirumstances and/or issues in your life.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACH RESCUE REMEDY
For First Aid use, emergencies, panic, distress, fear and shock.
This is a composite of 5 flower remedies; Impatiens,
Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis. Discovered
and used with great effect by the late Dr. Edward Bach. For
more information go to www.bachcentre.com
If you have received a shock of any kind, emotional
or physical or even terror, Rescue Remedy will come to your
aid.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AUSTRALIAN BUSH FLOWER EMERGENCY ESSENCE
For First Aid use – emergencies, panic, distress, fear
and shock.
“This combination of Fringed Violet,
Grey Spider Flower, Sundew, Waratah & Crowea will help ease
fear, panic, distress and shock. If a person needs specialised
medical help, this Essence will provide comfort until treatment
is available.” - Ian White www.ausflowers.com.au
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These remedies and all other flower remedies
can be used on children and the aged.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All flower remedies are administered orally,
either 4 drops diluted in water, juice or dropped directly onto
the tongue. Both of these remedies also come in a cream which
is excellent for sprains, strains, bruises etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flower essences can be given to any animal,
domestic or wild. Even a transplanted shrub can be given water
with a couple of drops of remedy in it. These essences can be
used on anyone at any age. Also a single drop in the drinking
water for birds, cats, dogs, hamsters, mice, gerbils etc. The
only creature I would not give flower essences to are fish.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above flower remedies do not, nor are they intended to take
the place of medical attention but will calm any situation,
therefore delaying shock which can result in the saving of a
life.
