Nutrition of the Mind

The power of the mind and its related problems is a huge subject and obviously a very important part of overall optimum health.

There are many disorders which affect the mind – anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, behaviour problems, schizophrenia, eating disorders, to name a few. The mind can also very much affect physical illnesses and often be the difference between whether a person makes a good recovery or not. (Or even if they are actually physically ill or not – “sick with fear” Being a good example of this). The mind, like the body needs to be nourished and nurtured correctly and this, although vital, is often completely overlooked in today’s modern hectic lifestyle.

It is all too easy for a person to fall into the trap of medication therapy when all that may be needed is an improvement in nutrition, coupled with sufficient rest to aid recovery.

Each individual case is different and during the initial consultation and subsequent follow ups, relevant advice will be given on a personal basis. But as a general rule the more stressed a person is, the more dehydrated will be the picture. It is a vicious circle of dehydration contributing to stress, preventing nutrients being absorbed and oils being used to create a health rehydrated cell and further stress causing further dehydration. Once an assessment has been made the situation will begin to unravel and enormous improvements can be achieved, gradually and more importantly perhaps, on a permanent basis.

At thebodymindandsoul we treat people using our philosophy which is reflected in our name. From a nutritional point of view there area we can focus on is nutrients for the brain. To support this we also encourage our clients to look at other behavioural aspects that led them to become malnourished. For example if someone has a hectic lifestyle the nutritionist would create a plan for the body and the hypnotist would create a plan to relax the client. Hand in hand these techniques are more powerful than when used in isolation.

When looking to boost the brain to increase IQ a nutritionist would focus on providing the right oils essential for brain development. Phospholipids and the essential fatty acids are the building blocks of the brain cell membranes. Therefore a capsule that combines Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils would be recommended, as well as a teaspoon a day of lecithin which is one of the highest providers of phospholipids.
